Picnic on Third Opens South of Market in San Francisco

San Francisco, CA – Monday, November 10, 2014, partners Natalia Bushyager and Leigh Loper opened their first brick and mortar venture, Picnic on Third – a new approach to casual dining that features fresh and inventive prepared menu items—a high end menu at café speed.

Picnic on Third, located in South Park at 493 Third Street at Bryant, is open on weekdays from 7AM to 7PM, offering lunch and dinner as a sit-down affair, or packaged to-go. Coffee and pastries are available all day. The 35-seat space, designed by Oakland-based Larson Shores, is warm and comfortable with an open kitchen and long marble counters. The carefully curated menu is centered around local and seasonal ingredients and will change daily. Platters of vegetables, salads, salsas, and grains are displayed next to copper pots filled with seasoned meats and hearty stews. Check their website for what’s offered today, as well as upcoming menus.

Natalia and Leigh met while working the line at Foreign Cinema in 2010, and have been cooking together ever since. Growing up, Natalia was immersed in South Carolina cuisine, and made her way to the Bay Area and such kitchens as Chez Panisse and Camino. Leigh trained at the Culinary Institute of America in Napa and worked at Josey Baker Bread and at Quince. They love to cook, create, ferment, experiment with spices (there are over 50 on the wall in the restaurant), and make their own jam, granola, pickles, hot sauces, and Natalia’s favorite: house-made sausages.

The pair find menu inspiration in regions, seasons, and more abstract concepts. The opening week menus ranged from South Carolina to Mediterranean, and included items such as achiote pork shoulder steamed in banana leaves, crispy confit duck leg with pink peppercorn, and roasted cauliflower with heirloom tomato jam.

The first iteration of the wine and beer list includes Tantara Pinot Noir from Santa Barbara, Bokisch Albarino from Lodi, Go-To Session IPA from Stone, and Sudwerk’s Dry-Hopped Lager. Espresso drinks made with Oakland’s Contraband beans will be served alongside single origin pour-over from Halfwit in Chicago. Cold brew coffee will be available on nitro. Pastries and treats from Sandbox, Heartbaker, and Little Bee will be served throughout the day.

Hours of Operation: Monday through Friday 7AM to 7PM. Lunch will be served from 11AM to 2:30PM. Happy hour & packaged dinners to-go available from 3PM–7PM.
